The New "Cabinet" Cake at BJ's Wholesale

I was recently given the opportunity to try out the new Coffee Milkshake Cake, that's now available at all Rhode Island BJ's Wholesale locations for a limited time.

I'm really not sure what the reason is behind a Rhode Islander's love of coffee, but there is a definite and genuine love for it.  There's a coffee shop, okay three coffee shops on every corner here.  I like to think it's the Coffee Syrup our parents always put into our milk that created this love affair.  You can ask any Rhode Islander about a Coffee Cabinet, and they'll develop an ear to ear smile when they think about drinking a nice tall, ice cold, glass. 

In fact, a true Rhode Islander will tell you than nothing goes as well with a Cabinet as a Rhode Island "Gagger."  ( I can see the look of perplexity on the faces of Non-Rhode Islanders now.)  What's a "gagger"? you ask.  Well it's a distinct type of hot dog that's topped with a fine meat sauce (not a chili sauce either.), onions, and celery salt, all placed on a steamed bun that's as soft as a cloud.

I can remember going to the local diner with my dad, and ordering a dozen of these gagger's.  The cook would line the buns up, not on the counter but from his hand, all the way up to his elbow, and quickly add all the toppings to each one.  It's a memory that's forever imprinted in my mind, and now, share that memory with my own daughters.

BJ's spent a lot of time researching the favorite flavors of Rhode Island, and came up with this Coffee Milkshake Cake that consists of three layers of fluffy gold cake separated by creamy coffee flavored mousse and covered with coffee flavored icing. The dreamy dessert can be served up quickly, no spoon or straw required, and it makes a great addition to any family picnic or outdoor barbecue.

So a cake is a cake, is a cake, right?  Not quite so.  We got home from BJ's and the girls immediately wanted to try this concoction.  I think the girls had the same kind of thought in their own head, as well as my husband.  I cut several small pieces from the cake, and placed them onto plates.

Now you know it's not something your mouth expected when immediately after the first bite, both your daughters say "Wow!"  "That's an awesome cake!", and you see that same ear to ear smile, that you see when you see someone drinking the original "Coffee Cabinet".  I'll  be honest, it's not at all what I was expecting either.  So how close is the resemblance to a true Coffee Cabinet?  Let's just say we had to go out and grab some gaggers! 

This cake is a must bring dessert to your next BBQ, picnic, or party if your in Rhode Island.  You won't want your mouth to miss out on this incredibly awesome taste.  I would have to say BJ's has definitely hit a home run on this one.  I'm a little sad that's it's only available for a limited time. 

The next time you head to your local RI BJ's, be sure to grab one of these cakes, and if you don't see it in the case, be sure to ask them for it, I guarantee it's not a cake that you'll want to miss out on.
